Boost The Immune System By Reducing Your Alcohol Intake
A new report based on research from the US has shown that regular binge drinking and alcoholism are responsible for weakening the immune system and putting the body at a higher risk of infection. The study was published in the BMC immunology journal and explains how the evidence from experiments on laboratory mice and cells strongly suggests that two of the key components of our immune system are weakened for 24 hours or more after a binging session.
Ruping Fan from the University if Louisiana and Stephen Pruett of the university of Mississippi commented that the body was at serious risk for at least 24 hours after binge drinking and some cases saw this risk lasting for 48 hours or more. The effects of having a weakened immune system for this long could range from the development of a common cold, feeling fatigued and worn out to serious infections.
The components which are weakened through binge drinking are interrelated so the effects are more serious. The TLR4 protein receptor is responsible for boosting the responses of the immune system to viruses and bacteria that enters it. When the receptor is blocked by alcohol, our bodies cannot fight against viruses that enter it. The production of cytokine is retarded whilst there is so much alcohol in the body. The immune system only knows of any infectious bacteria or viruses in the body when it is warned by cytokine.
If the body does not know there is an infection looming because of a lack of cytokine and then it does not have the means to fight off the infection because the TLR4 receptor does not boost the system’s response, our health is at serious risk.
There are many things you can do to boost the immune system. Eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and supplementing your diet with any supplements if necessary will all help you to keep your immune system functioning at its highest level. However, the way you can really boost the immune system is to cut out any binge drinking, keeping your alcohol consumption to a minimum and looking after yourself if you do drink too much on a night out or at a party.
