Find Out The Causes of Reflux Before Turning To Drugs

There are many causes of reflux, to discover what they are, and it is always worthwhile to try and find what may be causing your reflux, before you turn to a reflux medication or look for reflux help.

Of the millions of people that suffer with reflux, the majority have to live awith and control this disease for the rest of their lives.

The stomach produces acid to break up the food that you eat. Once this acid starts climbing up your esophagus, the result is heartburn or acid reflux. The esophagus can often be damaged by this acid which is regularly travelling up it.

The most common causes of reflux is due to the damage that the LES can suffer. The LES is a little valve which is positioned between the stomach and the esophagus. Normally when you eat the food will travel down your esophagus, the LES allows your food to enter the stomach, and then it closes to prevent stomach acid escaping into the esophagus.

If you LES is damaged or weak, it may not be able to close fully to prevent stomach acid shooting up your esophagus. The acid is the cause of acid reflux or heartburn. The common solution to this problem is usually to take some form of medication that allows less acid production in the stomach, or something that will dilute the acid. The symptoms of reflux will be less painful but the cause of the reflux will not be addressed. This is one of the most common causes of reflux.

If you have a hiattal hernia, it can add to the severity of reflux. This particular hernia re-positions the LES. The LES is positioned by the diaphragm. A hiattal hernia pushes the LES higher into the chest. This causes a problem because the LES and the diaphragm work in conjunction to prevent reflux occurring. The seperation leads to less effectiveness.

Some people may not know that a common cause of reflux is smoking. Smoking can clog up the esophagus, and it can take a few hours after smoking a cigarette for this to right itself in the esophagus.

Reflux normally appears after eating. The trick to avoid acid reflux problems as much as possible is to eat small meals. The more that you eat, the more acid your stomach will create to help digest the food. Eating too close to bedtime is not a good idea. While you are on your feet, the acid will be kept down because of gravity. However when you lie down after a meal, the effects of gravity are minimised and the acid will slowly start to flow up the esophagus.

These are probably the main causes of reflux.

  1. Great article! So many people are chasing symptoms and worsening their health through the use of antacids and acid suppressors. While these solutions may relieve pain, they make the overall problem worse!
