Ringing In the Ears Exposed

There will be times when you experience ringing in the ears, a sound that whirls around your head. Do not worry too much though because this condition known as tinnitus will usually go away by itself. The inner, outer, or middle ears can be affected by this, and even the brain. This is not really a serious condition, but this can be sign of a deeper ailment for other people.
Some tinnitus or head noise is rather normal. More or less 36 million Americans experience this condition. You may not be aware of the noises or sounds your body makes because of external sounds. Wax formation in the external ear may allow you to hear tinnitus, as the wax blocks off outside noise.
The causes of tinnitus are varied. The most common one that causes this condition is when the inner ear’s hearing nerve endings are damaged. Listening to very loud music, especially with frequent usage of ear or head phones, cause tinnitus. Old age, usually accompanied by hearing impairment, also leads to frequent tinnitus. Excessive intake of medications like aspirin is also a common cause. Serious cases of tinnitus may be caused by fluid, infection or disease in the ear, like the middle ear bones or ear drum or tympanic membrane.
On top of these, tinnitus may quite possibly be a symptom of more serious health issues, like aneurysms or acoustic neuroma. Aneurysm is the widening of an artery, a vein, or the heart itself. An acoustic neuroma is a small, benign tumor on the acoustic nerve.
Your doctor can diagnose your tinnitus. A series of tests can help him find out where the ringing sounds could be located. You should not fail to tell him that you are suffering from this. Does it occur frequently? Does it ring at the same rate of your heartbeat? You should tell all these to your doctor as he may uncover signs of vertigo or loss of hearing. Vertigo happens when you cannot control your balance.
Further testing may include auditory brain stem response or ABR. Computerized Tomography scans or Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan may also be used. Computerized scans like these can check on your nerves and neural pathways inside the brain. These are necessary to exclude or confirm tumors as causes.
As said above, tinnitus may voluntarily go away on its own. Also, there are no specialized treatments to address tinnitus. But there are some ways to take care of your ears and auditory sense. Here are some easy suggestions.
Avoid cleaning your ears with cotton swabs. These can push earwax in deeper and cause compactions which negatively affect hearing. Instead, use a dampened soft washcloth. Wrap a corner around your finger and clean the external ear. When traveling by plane, plug your ears with earplugs or cover them with earmuffs. Also avoid listening to sounds using earphones or headphones. The direct application of sound to your ears can damage the eardrums. Keep it to a maximum of an hour a day.
