New things occuring? I've never thought of it like that before. When we actually get down to define anxiety in a strict sense, it’s a sense of worry or uneasiness about a situation which has a little bit of uncertainty surrounding it. What could actually happen next? What will the outcome be? In a way, anxiety is a fantastic indicator of forward thinking or “row boat thinking,” a phrase I have just lately coined.
What’s the thought behind “row boat thinking?”
Each one of us are given a fascinating narrative throughout our lives that sounds a lot like this…”I’ll be ecstatic when that occurs. It will all turn out when I get there. ” The problem is, we are rowing towards this island that actually does not exist. We think it’s there, but it’s one of the most beautifully created mirages we have ever experienced. It’s really sexy. It’s captivating. It's just enough to keep us grasping and thirsting for more. But there’s great danger in this sort of thinking meanging that anxiousness can be our best indicator that we are basically caught in the process of doing it in the first place.
Living in the future can have as many negative complications as living during the past. We all really know what it is actually like to want to escape our past, but I am going to hazard to say that we absolutely must avoid living in the future just as much. We can get stuck in a spot, a particularly uncertain place, that frankly is out of our control. Should you set targets and have a vision for what you truly desire out of your life? Definitely. But the danger is building the foundation of your true happiness on such a place.
The one guarantee I can make you about this life is that it will change. You can not go to the past, the present is changeable at any moment and the future is to be determined.
So what can we do?
That uncertainty…love it. Embrace the hell out of it. The doubtful places in your life are opportunities to have nothing short than magic knock your socks off. Do you really know what is going to pop up? Of course not. Will you attempt to project as much as is possible? Yes, we’ve all done that haven’t we? But when you start coming gently back to the current time, continuously because our minds never stop getting distracted, you get to completely be here. Here is a excellent spot to be. Start basically seeing what is occurring around you rather than spending a lot of time distracting yourself from everything that's not right here and now.
So all stress truly is, when it comes down to it, is new things taking place. Enjoy that feeling and sit with it.
