What type of Breast Implant should I have?
Whether it is to increase breast size or perhaps even out noticeable size differences, breast augmentation surgery has been the procedure of choice by women for many years and it’s increasing popularity is a testament to it’s success. Saline implants have valves that enable them to be “topped-up” which means they are suitable for usein patients that want a dramatic size increase that will need to be undertaken in stages. In Manhattan breast augmentation clinics, there is now also a choice of implant shape with the introduction of teardrop-shaped implants which are intended to give a more “natural” breast shape, however the incisions to insert these need to be larger than those needed for round implants as they are much less flexible. The next thing to decide on is silicone or saline. Silicone implants have been used in breast augmentation surgery in Manhattan since the 60’s and have the benefit of being long-standing and therefore well tested and modified. The main element of breast tissue is body fat, which silicone gel mimics very well giving a realistic look and feel to breasts enhanced with silicone implants. They are reliable implants tha very rarely leak or rupture. Saline implants have a thick silicone shell, but are filled with a salt water liquid. Silicone implants need bigger incisions that saline implants to insert as they are pre-filled, whereas saline implants have a valve that allows them to be filled post-insertion. Once they are filled the filling tube is removed and the valve seals the implant. One of the benefits of filling the implants once they have been inserted is that it enables the surgeon to even out the size of the breasts, perfect for those looking to balance the size of their breasts through breast enhancement. Saline implants don’t feel quite as natural as silicone implants thanks to the malability of the gel used in silicone. There is also the risk with saline implants that they will wrinkle, which can be visible on the breasts, especially on skinny women. Saline implants have been known to completely deflate, in which case a replacement implant would be required. They also have a greater risk of leaking than silicone implants. The body easily absorbs saline as it is a harmless substance which can be dealt with quickly.
